The Dolomites: 4 Best Things To Do

Overall vibe of The Italian Dolomites:

The Dolomites are an epic mountain range in Northern Italy, basically bordering Switzerland and Austria. The moutains, views and lakes are absolutely breathtaking and there’s a beautifully unique blend of Austrian, German and Italian cultures. If you like to hike, ski or just soak in beautiful nature, you will love the Dolomites.

Where to stay in the Dolomites

We stayed at The Bad Moos which was amazing. We loved the vibe, pool, sauna & steam room and incredible breakfast that was included (I’d skip including dinner; it was just okay). The views were beautiful, there were some great restaurants nearby and there’s a great walking trail right across the property with nice views. It IS about 45 min - 1 hour from Tre Cime and Lago Sorapis but we didn’t mind the drive because it was beautiful and we loved the area in general.

In case The Bad Moos is sold out, here’s another similar option: Hotel Quelle Nature Spa Resort.

Every other blog I read suggested staying in Cortina d’Ampezzo but I’m glad we didn’t. The main perk of staying here is that you are a bit closer to the best hikes so location wise, it is a great area. But I just didn’t love the vibe…it felt cheesy and didn’t have the “I’m really immersed in nature and resetting” vibe.

4 Best Things To Do In The Dolomites

1. Lago Sorapis Hike

This was my favorite hike ever!!! It’s 6 miles and 2,401ft of elevation so it’s very steep/challenging but so worth the effort. The views are amazing the whole hike up and when you get to the lake, it’s absolutely breath taking!!

2. Tre Cime Hike

This is the quintessential hike everyone does in the Dolomites and for good reason. It also has a lot of elevation gain but not quite as much as Lago Sorapis. It’s 6.3 miles and 1,532ft elevation.

3. Eat pizza at Pizzeria Martina

AMAZING pizza restaurant that you MUST eat at!! SOOOO good! It’s in Sesto, which was very close to where we stayed, The Bad Moos.

4. Get lunch or dinner at Henn Still Pollaio (Skihütte Henn-Stoll)

Another great restaurant that I highly recommend. I got the grilled chicken salad for lunch and it was SOO fresh and delicious. Trevor got the steak and grilled veggies which was also amazing.

Other Things To Know About The Dolomites

EVERY other travel blog mentions Alpi Di Suisi as a must see spot. I personally didn’t think it was anything special so I’d skip it.

There’s SOOO much you could see and do in the Dolomites; these were just our absolutely favorites in the few days we had, in the location we were in. You could easily spend a week exploring more of the sights, hikes and magical lakes (like Lago Brais). I recommend choosing where you want to stay based on the 1-2 things you want to do most (for us this would have been Lago Sorapis) and then researching/asking local for other things to do in that area.

The roads are super windy and up and down. If you get car sick, I highly recommend bringing something for motion sickness. I use these ginger candies and they work wonders!!
